Her career in music began as a young girl, competing in local contests before the age of 10 and recording for the first time when she was 14 years old. In 1985 she was signed to Rounder Records. Her first solo album debuted in 1987. The band invited her to join the band who she continues to perform Alison Krauss and Union Station as well as releasing her debut album in the group in the year 1989.
