Hanks' next role - astronaut and commander Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - reunited him with Ron Howard. The performances in the film and Kevin Bacon's performance in general were highly praised by reviewers. The film was nominated for nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks then acted as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). A year later, he made his directing debut in the musical comedy That Thing You Do!
